Chiliz and fan tokens: the future of sports tokenization

Overview

Where is sports tokenization heading? In this MERGE Madrid conversation, Chiliz —the company behind Socios.com and the sports blockchain Chiliz Chain— reviews the origin of fan tokens, why it chose Madrid, its global expansion, its US strategy, the “fan tokens 2.0” that aim to combine utility and equity, and the challenges of regulation in Europe.

What you'll learn

  • What fan tokens are: fungible engagement tokens, not NFTs
  • Why Madrid: regulation, talent and proximity to the clubs
  • Global expansion: Europe, Brazil, Turkey, Asia and the US
  • United States: the FTX collapse and the new regulatory window
  • Fan tokens 2.0: tokenizing minority stakes in clubs
  • Europe vs US: “innovate vs regulate” and the consumer challenge

Session summary

The origin: Chiliz presents itself as the company that created the fan token concept (fungible tokens, not NFTs), a kind of on-chain loyalty program where fans vote on club decisions and win tickets and VIP experiences; it has worked with more than 80 teams (FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan and others, according to the talk).

Why Madrid: Chiliz explains its choice of Spain for its regulator, its talent and its proximity to the clubs, with one of its largest offices in Madrid.

Expansion and the US: it describes its presence in Brazil, Turkey, Japan and Korea, and its push (and costly lesson) in the United States after the FTX collapse in 2022; with the new US regulatory framework, the company is preparing to launch fan tokens for NBA, NFL or MLS teams.

Fan tokens 2.0: it describes the ambition to acquire minority stakes in major clubs to tokenize them and, potentially, combine them with current fan tokens, uniting utility and equity on-chain (something, it clarifies, not yet legally possible today).

Regulation: it praises MiCA as a pioneer but insufficient versus the speed of the US, criticizes competition between European countries and calls for regulation better suited to consumer-facing utility platforms, with entry barriers (KYC) proportional to small amounts.
